Why do most people not Make Money from Financial Spread Betting?

It’s often quoted that 90% of all Financial Spread Betting and FX accounts do not make money. From my research this figure also stands true for most retail stockbroking accounts so it’s not just Spread Betting. It’s also said that 90% of professional money managers do not beat an index fund.

So what separates the 10% winners from the 90% that lose? In this video you will find some tips from Vince Stanzione. Regardless of if you’re using Spread Betting, CFDs or buying and selling shares via an online broker it’s important to treat trading and investing as a business and not some bit of fun. The winning traders have a system (which does not need to be complicated) but it must have a defined way to get in and out of a trades.

It’s also important to realise that many of your trades will not be successful and that is just part of the business, what is important is to limit the losses on those trades so no one trade however sure you are ends up causing you to lose a large percentage of your account.

I have found over my 27 years of trading and investing that we can learn as much from losing traders as winning ones, if we can identify the patterns of a losing trader and then ensure that we do not do the same then we will be successful.

Best Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) so far this year and the Goldman Sachs N11

Below you can see a table of the best and worst Exchange Traded Funds. These can be bought and sold via an online broker such as chalesschwab or interactivebrokers. You can also place a spread bet or CFD trade via a company such as IG Index or Cantor Index.

What is interesting is that 3 of the best markets so far in 2012 are in fact in the N11.

The Next Eleven (N-11) are the eleven countries—Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Turkey, South Korea, and Vietnam—identified by Goldman Sachs investment bank and economist Jim O’Neill.

Whilst we all know growth is slowing down in developed markets and areas such as Europe are in a recession many parts of the world are seeing massive changes and growth of the new middle class. I explain more about looking for new opportunities and trends in my course Making Money From Financial Spread Trading, click here for more details.

Trading Exchange Traded Funds – Example of a Spread Bet with IG Index

An Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) can be bought or sold via an online broker and some of the larger ETFs also have traded options. You can also place a financial spread bet on many ETFs, a company such as IG Index, City Index and Cantor Index will allow you to go long or short an ETF.

For example here you can see the Biotech ETF (BBH) by making one trade you would have exposure to a basket of biotech shares the top 10 holdings would include:

BBH Top Ten HoldingsVince Stanzione financial spread betting on biotech shares

  1. Amgen Inc (AMGN): 15.10%
  2. Gilead Sciences Inc (GILD): 9.38%
  3. Biogen Idec Inc  (BIIB): 8.03%
  4. Celgene Corporation (CELG): 6.97%
  5. Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (ALXN): 5.04%
  6. Life Technologies Corp (LIFE): 4.30%
  7. Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc (AMLN): 4.25%
  8. Illumina, Inc. (ILMN): 4.15%
  9. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (REGN): 4.04%
  10. Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (ONXX): 4.00%

The advantage here is that you have diversification rather than investing in just one company in what can be a very volatile sector. By using a financial spread bet we also have the advantage of leverage and the tax free advantage in the UK.

Example Spread Bet

Let’s say we want to bet on the BBH to go higher we can buy the March 2013 contract at 5408 and we decide to trade £1 per point (not you can trade US$ or £)  so a move from 5408 to 5409 is 1 point.

One month later we see the price is quoted at 5900/5920 and we decide to take profits from our Financial Spread bet so we sell at 5900. So to recap we bought at 5408 sold at 5900 = 492 points x £1 gives us a £492 profit which is tax free for UK residents. Of course we could have also done the opposite and made money from falling prices.

SELF-MADE MILLIONAIRE Vince Stanzione amassed a fortune and a jet-set life on the Mediterranean by gambling on stock market price movements over the internet. And now he shares the secrets of his system, insisting that it’s so simple, anyone can do it.

“Stock market traders like to build a mystique around what they do, hiding it all behind jargon to keep people out,” says Stanzione. “Phrases such as ‘spread betting’ and ‘gambling on price movements’ can initially be off-putting … but what lies behind them can be easy to learn and accessible to anyone with a modicum of common sense and a determination to earn more from their money than the miserable rates offered by today’s savings accounts.”

“You need to put aside a few stereotypes,” he continues. “This is not the world of hot-headed youths storming through the city yelling “sell”. In fact, I see a lot of interest among the 55+ age group and many retired people who’ve become fed up with seeing almost no return on their savings.”

Stanzione has turned the system that made his fortune into a personal training package called ‘Making Money From Financial Spread Trading’. Consisting

Trading’. Consisting of a workbook, two DVDs, a dedicated members-only website and full support, the package covers both spread trading and conventional sharedealing and, importantly in these unpredictable times, shows how money can be made from shares going down, and even sideways, as well as up.

“The package is designed for people with little or no experience,” says Stanzione. “I’ve demystified everything, I take students through it step by step and I provide a dummy account to practice on, all within the package. You start by studying, then you try a few small bets and work up from there at your own speed.”

you try a few small bets and work up from there at your own speed.”

“Typically, students spend around 30 minutes a day and can do it from anywhere. In fact, we’re seeing more and more people trading on their mobile phones and iPads, often as a sideline to their main job.”

The system is adaptable to different markets, such as commodities, shares, currencies and indices. “Trading trends are like fashions: they change regularly and you need to go with them. At the moment we’re seeing a lot of interest in commodities such as oil, silver, gold and coffee, which can all be traded through the programme.”

Another old trading stereotype to dismiss is the idea of “betting your shirt” on a single idea. “This is the stuff of movies. You don’t have to make money from every trade,” counsels Stanzione. “In fact, that would be very unusual. You don’t even have to make a profit from the majority of your trades. If you lose a little on eight but do well on two, you’ve sensibly spread your risk and come out in profit, which is how any prudent investor works. And you don’t ‘bet’ large amounts on a whim. If you think something’s good, invest a small amount to test the water and then go for a bigger amount if you’re happy with the result.”

Of course, there are no guarantees of a return but learning from an expert greatly improves the odds, and trading with a financial spread bet has the added attraction that profits are tax-free. Would-be traders can start with as little as £1000.

Spread Betting Tip: Don’t Get Married!

Millionaire Trader Vince Stanzione says that you should never get married to your position if you want to be a successful trader. A good trader should be happy to go long or short the same market or stock. Also sticking to the same share or market just because it’s been good to you in the past is not the way to profit. Many get stuck in to a losing trade “hoping” it will get better when the best option is cut and start again.

Also whilst just staying with one or two markets may sound good practice I have found it’s better to play the field and have plenty of options open to you. If you decide to trade just the Euro/$ or just the S&P500 there will be times when those markets are just not offering great trading opportunities but you can bet that other markets will be offering better risk/reward trades. My system teaches how to trade Currencies, commodities, world-wide stocks, Indices and Bonds giving you the most ways to profit.
