Using Financial Spread Betting with IG Index

Posted on February 9, 2013 by admin

The screen below is my actual live Account with IG Index. With Financial Spread Betting you can place bets on a massive range of shares, commodities, currencies and indices all from one account, with many markets being open 24 hours a day. You can also trade in the currency of your choice, in this example I am using £ per point even though I have bets open on US indices.

Taking for example the Wall Street bet (which is the Dow Jones Index) you can see I have a March contract, this expires the 3rd Friday in March which is the 15th. All spread bets just like a futures contract need an expiry date however if at the time I still which to carry on then the bet can be “rolled over” from March to June or September.

You can see the open price of each bet so for example 12752 and I have £10 per point. A point on the Wall Street index is 12752 to 12753, some markets may be 1/10 or even 1/100th.

The current price is 13911.5 so the profit is the current price less the entry price X £10 (the stake). Of course had I been betting the market to go down and it went up I would be losing the same. With spread betting we can place a stop loss so we can limit our risk say to 100 points.
